Curious about the world of dog showing? While I am not expert, I have been competing for the last few years in obedience and agility. The goal of this page is to show a little bit about the world of competitive dog showing and encourage others to give it a try.
You might wonder why you would want to show your dog. Not only do dog shows impact the local community in a positive economic way, it is also a great way to meet new people and help you develop a special bond with your dog. Also a busy, happy, well trained dog is a pleasure to live with and much too tired to chew up your shoes!
Most people think of the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show when they think about dog shows. But the Conformation ring is only one type of showing available. For the smart dogs there is Obedience, Rally and Schutzhund, for dogs with lots of energy there is Agility, Herding and Flyball, for dogs with lots of grace there is Frisbee and Freestyle, and for dogs that love to romp through woods and fields there is Tracking, Field Work and Ground Trials. Many of these shows are even open to mix breeds or dogs with physical faults that would disqualify them from Conformation. So really there is no reason not to get out there with your dog and find a sport that both of you can enjoy! Or do what I do and pick a couple of sports.
